Richard Sayle caught this superb male specimen on Bickerton Hills on 17th June and was delighted to see Azure Damsels in tandem as well. On 1st July, John Roberts saw several Black-tailed Skimmers there including this pair in cop.īroad-bodied Chasers appear to be widespread at the moment. Sadly, it’s not yet fully open to the public but will be a real treat when it happens. On 1st July, Bob Wilkinson saw several newly- emerged Ruddy Darters and has sent in this image of an immature/female.Ĭheshire Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve at Crown Farm, Delamere is teeming with dragons and damsels at the moment including Emperor, Four-spot Chaser, Azure damsels and Common Blue damsels. The ditches near Shocklach (SJ4272 5032) south of Farndon seem to be a profitable place to visit currently with Emperor, Banded Demoiselle, Four-spot Chaser and a variety of damsels. Here are a couple of his stunning images. Peter Kelly had a most rewarding couple of hours at Abney Hall, Cheadle on 8th July including sightings of Emperor, Brown Hawker, Southern Hawker, Four-spot Chaser, Broad-bodied Chaser, Common Darter, Black-tailed Skimmer, Azure Damsels, Common Blue Damsels and Blue-tail Damsels. Her daughter Suzanne took this super shot of an Emerald Damsel on the 11th July. Muriel Dale has been recording several species which have either emerged from or visited her garden pond including Common Darters and Emperors. It’s ovipositing time! – Joy Beresford took this image of an Emperor laying in a private pool near Marton while a male circled overhead on 13th July. This is the FIRST record for this species on the Wirral!Īs a reminder of just how Alien (but beautiful) dragonflies really are, I thought that I’d post my picture of a Brown Hawker exuvia in its final position on the bankside at Hatchmere. On the 15th July, Elliot Wilson visited the RSPB’s Burton Mere Wetlands and was quick enough to snap this lovely specimen. STOP PRESS – In the last 30 years, only 3 verified records for Golden-ringed Dragonfly in Cheshire have been logged in iRecord. A beautiful little insect but usually difficult to see unless you have really good bins and camera. Peter Kelly took a shot of this specimen at Newbridge Pool, Winsford (SJ652686) on 19th July. Sightings of Small Red-eyed Damsels are now starting in Cheshire. While looking for Purple Hairstreaks on the NT’s Bickerton Hill, Richard Sayle took this stunning shot of a Black Darter on the 23rd July. While scouting for these on 3rd August, John Roberts spotted Common Darters and this ovipositing Brown Hawker. One end of he lake has become covered in blanket weed and so might prove good habitat for Small Red-eyed Damsels. Small Sandiway pool (SJ606688) has proved to be a very interesting site to visit. On 4th August, Mark O’Sullivan captured this great side view of a Southern Hawker at Hob Hey Wood. This superb shot of a colourful male Southern Hawker was taken by Richard Sayle at Hockenhull Platts in early August. Great pics!Ī visit to Hockenhull Platts on 12th August by Joy Beresford yielded a goodly number of species including Brown Hawker, Common Darter, Migrant Hawker and this wonderful image of a Banded Demoiselle. The picture below is Eric’s and if you look carefully, you can just see the ovipositor.īrian and Colleen Pearson made a couple of very fruitful visits to Danes Moss on 23/24th August sighting Black Darter, Southern Hawker, Common Darter (pictured) and Migrant Hawker (pictured). On the 25th August, Eric Davies and I spent a happy 15 minutes watching a Southern Hawker ovipositing in moss alongside wooden staging at Chester Zoo’s Nature Reserve. In fact, Chris was convinced that there were 2 individuals but it was understandably difficult to see both at the same time. The sighting was at Hilbre Island and the specimen was seen on the 25th and 26th. STOP PRESS! The first verified sighting in Cheshire & Wirral of a Southern Migrant Hawker has now been made by Chris Williams, Chairman Hilbre Bird Observatory on 25th August. Joy Beresford had a good day on 28th August at Billinge Green, nr Northwich with sightings of Brown Hawker, Blue-tailed Damsels and 2 Migrant Hawkers, one of which is pictured below. Steve Gresty captured this great shot of a Migrant Hawker in flight at Shocklach on the 28th August. Steve Richardson had plenty on 6th September and 3 different species: Common (his picture below), Ruddy and Black Darter.Īlso on the same day, Steve photographed this great picture of a female Southern Hawker. Hogshead Woods (near Delamere Forest) is a good location to see different types of Darters at the moment. Leanna Dixon has sent in some stunning close-up shots of a Southern Hawker resting at New Ferry Butterfly Park on 4th September. On 4th November, Andy Goodwin was spotting Common and Black Darters (pictured) at Doolittle Pool and Black Lake in Delamere Forest. The season is still going late into the autumn.
